These are the societies of control, which are in the process of replacing disciplinary societies. “Control” is the name Burroughs proposes as a term for the new monster, one that Foucault recognizes as our immediate future. Paul Virilio also is continually analyzing the ultrarapid forms of free-floating control that replaced the old disciplines operating in the time frame of a closed system. … There is no need to fear or hope, but only to look for new weapons.”
Originally published in L’Autre Journal 1 (May 1990), this essay is derived from discussions during the Foucault seminar, notably sessions 18 and 19 (April 8 & 15, 1986). The essay is reprinted in Pourparlers (Paris: Minuit, 1990), then translated in the journal OCTOBER 59 (Winter 1992), Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, pp. 3-7, and finally included in Negotiations, trans. Martin Joughin (New York: Columbia University Press, 1995), pp. 177-182.
