Democracy shouldn't only play a part among the characters but also at the equilibrium between the characters and the space in which they are shown. When Stroheim shows a street, the street exists. When a character crosses a street, it's terrifiying; you feel the danger of a street, the traffic, and a human being in a street. And the human being isn't more important than the traffic, the traffic isn't less important than the human being...Kafka has that sense and it's what we modestly tried to do...
