L’homme, d’une part, peut réaliser des fins naturelles et en même temps, du fait qu’il est homme ne se produit il pas quelque chose en lui ? Il transforme les fins naturelles. Quelle est la fonction d’une cérémonie et d’un rite ? Celui-ci se distingue de la fin naturelle. Soit un groupe social, la famille, dans son aspect cérémoniel. Elle agit bizarrement. Elle arrache à la nature des déterminations pour en faire des évènements de l’histoire : manger, aimer, dormir et mourir. La fonction de la famille c’est la nourriture en commun, la sexualité, le sommeil et la mort. La mort est une détermination de la nature. La famille en fait un évènement de l’histoire en la recueillant dans la mémoire.

On the one hand, the human being can realize natural ends, but at the same time, does it not produce something in itself by virtue of being human? It transforms the natural ends. What is the function of a ceremony and of a ritual? It is distinct from a natural end. Take a social group [like] the family in its ceremonial aspect. It acts strangely. It wrests determinations from nature to create the events of history: eating, loving, sleeping, and dying. The function of the family is the sharing of food, sexuality, sleep, and death. Death is a determination of nature. The family makes it a historical event by collecting it in memory.

La sexualité, le sommeil, la mort. La mort est une détermination de la nature. La famille en fait un évènement de l’histoire en la recueillant dans la mémoire.

Similarly, sexuality, sleep, death. Death is a determination of nature. The family makes it a historical event by collecting it in memory.

这种礼规活动必须被称为仪式。同样，性也借由例如赞同的形式而成为精神的事件。自然在仪式的过程中被提升到历史的层面。

Cette activité du rituel il faut l’appeler cérémonie. De même la sexualité devient évènement de l’esprit sous la forme par exemple du consentement. La nature est portée au niveau de l’histoire au cours de la cérémonie.

This ritual activity must be called ceremony. Similarly, sexuality becomes an event of the spirit under the form, for example, of consent. Nature is raised to the level of history in the course of the ceremony.
